"From 1915 until the Black Sox scandal broke in the late summer 1920, baseball was in denial about its gambling problem. Christy Mathewson was the only man in baseball who wasn't on board with the whitewash. When he had players who sold out on him, he called them on it and tried to have Hal Chase banned from baseball. During the 1919 World Series, he sat with the reporters and said bluntly that the White Sox were throwing the series. He was the Churchill of this crisis, the only man who would stand up and face what was going on."
